Another Firearms Casualty
Eliphalet Remington built his first rifle barrel more than 200 years ago, painstakingly crafting it in his father’s forge in upstate New York. At that point ammunition was round, the British were the bad guys and gun control involved forearm strength. About a decade later, Remington moved his operation just beside the newly opened Erie Canal. Remington Arms became a force in Ilion, NY west of Albany producing weapons used by cops, robbers, soldiers and the public. But as generations passed, competition and economics eroded Remington’s bottom line and its presence in the village, whose Main Street stops at its gates. That road reached a dead end in late November when the privately held company announced it would relocate its Remington Ilion operations to Geogia amid suggestions from company leaders. New York’s efforts to stem gun violence had driven away a beloved local institution. The move meant the loss of jobs for more than 300 employees. The mayor said “Ilion is Remington. Remington is Ilion.”

When Your F150 Just won’t Do
Officials at a tiny AM Station in Jasper, Ala. were stunned when thieves made off with its 200 foot tall, heavy steel radio tower. “I have heard of thieves in this area stealing anything, but this one takes the cake” said longtime station manager Brett Elmore. Police are investigating and Elmore has put up a GoFundMe page to raise the $60,000 to $100,000 needed for a new tower. “You’re not going to keep me down,” he said.

Jug of Wine, a loaf of Bread
We know humans began growing wheat to make bread about 11,000 years ago. It was thought that growing grapes to make wine came much later, as the oldest archaeological evidence of wine drinking comes from clay pots from the Caucasus that date to 8,000 years ago. A new study though, suggest that farmers there were cultivating grapevines all along, reports The Washington Post. When scientists at Yunnan Agricultural University in China examined the genetic ancestry of thousands of grape types, they concluded that the first vineyards likely appeared simultaneously with the first wheat farms. What is more is these early vineyards emerged at about the same time in the Caucasus and also some 600 miles away in Western Asia, which implies communication among the farmers. “It was one of the first globally traded goods,” says study coauthor Peter Nick. “It is justified to say that the domestication of grapevines was really one of the driving forces of civilization.”
BEES Teach Each Other
Bumble bees can learn to solve puzzles by watching their peers complete them, a new study has found. Researchers at Queen Mary University in London places a sugar reward in a puzzle box that could be opened by pushing either a red tab, to rotate the lid clockwise, or a blue tab for counterclockwise. They trained “demonstrator” bees to open the device then allowed “observer” bees to watch their peers do it. When the observers where given the change to tackle the puzzle, they used the same method they had been shown by the demonstrators 98 percent of the time even after discovering that the other button was just was just as effective.
Treasures in the Attic
A NORTH CAROLINA A building inspector made a surprise discovery in the third floor attic of a home under construction – a live 8 foot alligator. “ I thought it was a stuffed animal that someone threw up there as a joke,” said Dean Brown. When he was about two feet from stepping the gators eyes popped open. He backed away and told the construction crew of his find. “they thought I was crazy,” said Brown. Animal control removed the gator which evidently climbed three floors after wandering over from a nearby marsh.

We’ve mentioned some of the trials we’ve suffered with the new website. We are on the mend now and, thank goodness, it is working well now. One thing we haven’t shared is a grand error made by the first woman to do work on the site. She thought she was meant to delete all the Google links we built up over the last 20 years and replace them with those of the new website.
Google links are the ones that give a site preference when a search is initiated. We had appeared on the first page of most any search having to do with items we offered, but, of course, after Megan deleted all the links we dropped to page 987 or something.
We are slowly climbing back up the ladder but it is slow and painful. Each time you use Google to search for something and click on our website it helps build back our reputation. Any time you mention us on a bulletin board or chat room, it helps us too, so, for that, we thank you. Cheers, Abby

Breechloading Shotguns 1860 -1940 Set of all 3 Volumes – Vorisek I’m interested in your reprint of the breechloading shotguns 1860-1940 Vorisek and am curious what exactly photocopy pages represents. I’m just curious how clear it all is. If you could send a couple pictures of some random pages I’d appreciate it. Ryan
Ryan, Joe Vorisek’s work was done on the 60s and 70s before quality photocopies, particularly of images, were available. Consequently, all or or most of the images lack detail. We sell the books mostly for the huge amount of reference text material they contain. If your interest is mainly in the images, these are not for you. Cheers, Rob

I placed an order on Feb 24th (83552) for three documents and received an email that it was received and was being processed. The requested documents were all digital. I do not think I have received them yet. I checked spam and my download files, but without success. I may not be looking in the right place. Please check. Steve
Hi Steve, PDFs are normally available to download in two ways. After payment there should have been a yellow download link to the right of the receipt area. Failing that the email you received acknowledging the purchase should have a download link. If the email doesn’t have the link would you please forward it to me so I can have the problem fixed? Please let me know either way. I tried to call this morning but I missed you. I’m sorry for the difficulty you’ve had. Cheers, Rob
Thank you for the information. I downloaded them. Steve

Hi. There has been a misunderstanding about this order. I have already received a copy of them, but you refunded the order I have received instead of cancelling the one i have in my cart. “BSA c1918 SMLE MK III- Lee Enfield Rifle” and “BSA c1912 Rifles and Sights“. I still owe you the payment. I was going to order some more book from you, but I can´t as I cant delete the two from my cart which I have received. English is not my first language, so I hope you can make sense of this. Regards Stefan
Hello Stefan, Your English is perfectly understandable, thank you. I think we were able to cancel items in your cart. Please let me know if I can help you any further. Don’t worry about the payment, eBay refunded it to you and reimbursed us, so all is good, Cheers, Rob for cornellpubs

If I am not happy with the quality of printing may I return the book? Recently I had purchased a reprinted book from Cornell that was of no use because of the quality of the photographs needed for reference. The quality of the book and printed text was excellent, however the b&w photos were almost indistinguishable, like xerox copies of xerox copies. Thanks, JB St. Augustine, FL
Hi John, Abby and I began our project over 20 years ago with the intention of preserving old firearms publications for reference before they are all gone. We have been fortunate that generous people all over the world have shared their originals with us to scan and reprint.
However, in many cases the only record of some of the rarest pieces were, themselves, old photocopies- Xeroxes. So, to make our collection a bit clearer we post a photo of an inside page and in the description we note when it is from an original as opposed to a copy.
Then, in order to give another avenue to clarity, we offer PDF versions of our reprints available for a very reasonable price. But, after all that if you are still disappointed, we can arrange a refund. I hope this answers your question. Cheers, Rob
Rob, Thanks for the explanation. I’ll try to stay with color, perhaps that will help. Placing order today. Thanks again, JB
John, If you are looking for decorative pieces, color is a good choice. Our objective, however, is to preserve and present largely unavailable information, hence the occasional photocopy. In the description it will say “original” for a direct scan or copy for photocopy and, certainly, not all of those are bad, in fact, most are very good. If the copy is bad we indicate that it is bad. Also, see the photo with the advert. Good luck, Abby

George W. Harder 1890 Illustrated Gun Catalogue & Price List – I’m refering someone for this book because of the Harder rifle. Does this say you actually print these books? Ebay says I just bought one but it looked like an old original, not a recent print. Just want to be sure you are not a descendant of J. HARDER somehow.
Hello, uh, well, we are in no way related to any firearms maker, we simply reprint over 6000 old firearms publications (about 3500 are on ebay). Does that answer your question? Rob

California Senate has passed Senate bill 1160 which requires every firearm to be registered like a motor vehicle with a yearly fee per gun, failure to comply would be an infraction. So I may be out of the gun collecting business if this law actually gets passed into law at which time I will be liquidating my collection and I don’t expect to get more than 2/3 of what I have invested but that’s life and it was fun. I have a gun Franco Pedrelli made in Italy , Armsport inc Miami model 1103 has the number 36 stamped into the top I would love to know more information and history can you help me please ?
Hi Dave, You don’t tell us much about the “gun” you have- shotgun, rifle, pistol etc, the action or bore etc. Assuming it is a shotgun, and the model number on the piece matches the stock models, then no, this Armsport catalog has French shotguns. Cheers, Rob

Hi all, I’m interested in your 1873 Winchester catalog reprint. Just have one question: I’m researching the 44 Rimfire cartridge. I noticed on the cover it says “ cartridges” My question is does this catalog list the 44 Henry cartridge for sale in the Flat or pointed round? Thank You, Brendan
Brendan, Early Win catalogs describe ammunition rather than display it, the 1876 catalog shows all their ammo. We sell pdfs inexpensively for research. Abby
Thanks Abby, I have purchased many of your reprints. I’m going to order the 1873 catalog reprint today. Thank You! Brendan

No, they are heat-bound with adhesive cloth tape. The larger Ackley volumes have the spine is embossed with the name. They open and lay flat. Abby ******************************************* Ideal 1936 Hand Book No. 32, – Ammunition & Reloading Does this hand book contain reloading data for either the .38 Short Colt, or .38 Long Colt cartridges? Thanks for checking on this information. Cheers, Jim Hi Jim, it has Long Colt, Colt Auto, 38 S&W and a bunch of 38 specials. Cheers, Rob for cornellpubs Information for the .38 Special, 38 S & W, and the various .38 Automatic Cartridges can be found almost anywhere & everywhere, but reloading for the .38 Long Colt is almost as elusive as the proverbial “hens teeth.” I may not ever use the .38 Long Colt reloading data, but I would certainly like to have data for reloading the .38 Long Colt since I have dies for reloading the old .38 Long Colt Cartridges. Hi Jane, “What can you tell me?” That is kind of open ended. I can say it is Sauer & Sohn, not “John”. Is your weapon a pistol, rifle, shotgun, machine gun, I don’t know? Actually, we are publishers and are not really set up to do research about the hundreds of weapons folks ask us about. I think your best bet is to get a lock for the gun and take it to a good gun shop for help from them. Cheers, Rob

Ideal 1928 Hand Book of Useful Information for Shooters No. 28 – Very disappointed. There is no load data for shotgun at all. Robert Guilliams
Dear Robert, The Contents page in the beginning shows Part 111 Reloading of Shotgun Cartridges starting on page 100. My copy has shotgun information starting on page 100 and has about 15 pages specifically devoted to shotgun loads. Does your copy not have pages 100-115?
Please let me know because that would mean your booklet would have to be less than 100 pages total and I would very much like to see it. I will be happy to pay the postage to see it if there are fewer than 100 pages. Cheers, Rob for cornellpubs

Hi Abby and Rob – I received the very nice copy of the M1903 field manual today. One page was wrinkled but it is not in the text and does not interfere in any way with using the manual. Hi Michael, The quick answer is, I don’t know. I assume you mean the newsletter is the thing not filling the screen, not regular emails like this one, right?
So, if it is the newsletter, then it is some screwy thing with my newsletter company. Normally I would be able to call them and ask but it looks as if they are slowly going out of business and they don’t return calls or emails. I use them because they cost $1200/year and I’m trying to squeeze my money out of them before they go belly up.
Sorry I’m not more useful, but that is the best I can do. Oh, one thing, you might try a different browser like Edge or Firefox, it works OK for me on both. Best, Abby
