HOW AN AK-47 WORKS

Scientists say the dire wolf has been brought back from extinction –
but has it?
Dallas-based biotech company Colossal has announced the birth of three pups bearing the DNA signatures of dire wolves, an iconic predator last seen roaming North America over 10,000 years ago.
With their names Romulus, Remus and Khaleesi, these pups are playing to the cultural imagination, blending ancient mythology with fantasy fiction. Romulus and Remus nod to the legendary founders of Rome, raised by a wolf, while Khaleesi evokes the dire wolves of Game of Thrones.
It’s a resurrection story made for the headlines, but beneath the dramatic narrative lies a more nuanced – and more scientifically grounded – story. The birth of these pups is not the return of an extinct species. Instead, it’s a demonstration of how far we’ve come in the toolkit of synthetic biology (a field that involves redesigning systems found in nature) and a reminder of how far we still are from truly reversing extinction.
The Dire Wolf became extinct around 10,000 years ago. It was about the same size as the largest modern forms of gray wolf (Canis lupus): the Yukon wolf and the northwestern wolf. A. d. guildayi weighed on average 60 kilograms (132 lb) and A. d. dirus was on average 68 kg (150 lb). Its skull and dentition matched those of C. lupus, but its teeth were larger with greater shearing ability, and its bite force at the canine tooth was stronger than any known Canis species.

Open or Concealed Carry
Carrying a gun should not be a status symbol or a social status. It is a responsibility that is often taken too lightly.
An individual carrying a gun must be competent and confident with his firearm. Although a target shooter may be competent and confident in a sterile, sporting environment that is surrounded by 8 foot berms, a gunner has taken the skill that he developed as a target shooter and developed the same confidence and competence in the chaotic, unsterile environment of the street.
In order to be accountable for the resting place of every round that you fire, you must have the accuracy and gun manipulation skills of a highly skilled target shooter. You cannot just guess, hope or pray that your projectile will hit your intended target. If your bullet misses the intended target and hits a bystander, you may find yourself in prison and having to live with the remorse that you took the life of an innocent person. Your “target shooter” skill set is one of the most important tools in your toolbox. When you deploy that shooter tool, you must be competent and confident… not hopeful and wishful. It is okay to be hopeful and wishful in a sporting environment but there is no room for that in the real world where one mistake can mean the difference between the life and death of the wrong person.

CHINESE POLICE say they gave “successfully trained” six squirrels to sniff out drugs. The Eurasian red squirrels have “a rather keen sense of smell” and have an advantage over drug-sniffing dogs because they can squeeze through nooks and crannies in tight spaces filled with mail packages, said narcotics squad trainer Yin Jin. In training so far, the squirrels have done “an excellent job” of detecting drugs inside packages, Yin said, but deploying them requires more work and “the patience for a flower to bloom.”
AN EXTERMINATOR called by a California homeowner whose house was under constant attack by an overactive woodpecker, he cut some holes in the walls and an avalanche of 700 pounds of acorns came pouring out. “They just kept coming and coming nonstop” said the exterminator, Nick Castro. Enough acorns were found, in fact, to fill eight garbage bags. Castro estimated it took the woodpecker two years to build the stockpile inside the walls. “Bird was a bit of a hoarder,” Castro said. New vinyl siding was installed to prevent further deposits.
“VIRGINIA IS FOR LOVERS”, after Virginia was named the U.S. state best prepared to withstand an invasion by space aliens. Among other factors in Virginia’s resilience, researchers cited the state’s dense forest coverage and third in the nation prevalence of military personnel.

During the pandemic David Balogun took the challenges of online learning in stride. He glided through remote middle and high school classes before graduating at the remarkable age of 9. The science and computer-programming wizard is among the youngest children to ever graduate from high school, beating, among other notable prodigies, the journalist Ronan Farrow, who graduated at 11. Although Balogun enjoys martial arts and playing piano, he says he is already decided on a career as an astrophysicist.
Diane Gordon’s Jeep broke down a year ago, forcing her to walk 2.7 miles to her job at a While Lake Township, Mich., grocery store. While heading home in January, she stopped at a gas station and spotted something near the door: a Ziploc bag filled with letters and nearly $15,000 in cash. Without pausing, Gordon grabbed the bag and called the police. They soon tracked down the owners – a newlywed couple who said the bag contained their wedding gifts. The community learned about Gordon’s good deed and set up a GoFundMe for her that has so far raised nearly $83,000. Gordon said, “I was just doing what I was taught to do.”
Ice fishing with his mother in Dickinson County, Iowa, earlier February, 17 year-old year old Joe Salmon saw an SUV fall through the ice, settling on the bottom, 3 to 4 feet down. Salmon realized that the driver, 83 year-old Thomas Lee, wasn’t able to get out – and that something was moving in the back, too. Salmon, a wrestler, went into the icy water. He broke the back window to scoop out Lee’s dog, Cooper, then pulled up the center console that had trapped Lee’s foot. Lee was released from the hospital with no injuries. Meanwhile, Salmon finished out the afternoon catching two fish!

******************************************* Shortly after I placed my order, I received an email from PayPal (maybe, although it may have been a fraud) with the text below. Do you have any idea how paypal could have obtained this information about our transaction? Robert Hi Robert, We’ve used Paypal as our “digital bank” for over 20 years when they were the only show in town. Now, with over 11,000 items we can’t afford to change, it would require editing each item. You don’t need a PP account to make a purchase through us, however. We take any credit card, but they process the payment. Best, Abby

What kind of deal could we make for me to purchase this item and also item 370791453996, the ’64 Hubley catalog. Thanks, Bill I’m sorry Bill, we don’t have room to dicker with our reprints. We try to place them as fairly as we can and still stay afloat. eBay takes a big cut, perhaps you can persuade them to make a cut in fees. Cheers, Rob I seriously doubt if I can influence Ebay. I just pay money, no cuts, no nothing. I’ve cursed them many times. Salutations, Bill Oh, I forgot my apologies for asking. Never did it did on previous purchases. Yours truly, Bill Hi Bill, No need to apologize; it never hurts to ask. Cheers, Rob
******************************************* Hello, some time ago I purchased a catalog in PDF form. How do I find it on the website? Thanks for your help! Michael Hi Michael, Good question. I searched for you using your email, first and last name and last name after 12/22 when we began offering PDFs and nothing came up. If you can give us some more information perhaps we can help. I’m sorry for your extra work. Best, Abby Thanks for getting back to me Abby. Memory isn’t the greatest lol. The pdf i bought was for sure a Daisy catalog. It may have been 1964for the year. I found the details on my paypal. The transaction ID is 4H686556YF077152P and the invoice number is : ecfaad-88564. Let me know if you need anything more.Appreciate your help Abby! Michael Duval Hello Abby, any luck yet ? thanks again. Mike Duval Hi Mike, We finally found it using the name Michael Duval, not Mike. None of the other numbers came up because, being a pdf we don’t store Paypal information with the file itself. The transaction id was: 1W970847F7652374U. Anyway, it was indeed a Daisy 1964 Guns and Toys Catalog – PDF. So, now we’ve found it, what can we do for you? You are entitled to five downloads from your purchase. Just use the original email I think you found and unless, you already downloaded five copies you can get another copy from our confirmation email. Does that help? Rob
Date: December 6, 2024 at 7:11:42 PM EST Transaction ID1W970847F7652374U Gross amount $8.71 USD
Thank you for looking into this Rob, If you could let me know how I can open up the pdf for viewing I would appreciate it. I haven’t downloaded it yet except for a minute ago I sent it to my alternate email with no luck. I planned on purchasing other items that I can open up and view on my Ipad to save on space. Appreciate your help! Mike Hello, Mike, When you purchased the PDF in December, upon payment, you were given a link on the payment page to download the item- you click on the link and select where on your computer you wish to place the file. Most people use the default of “downloads”. You should check to see if the Daisy is there. Failing that we also sent you an email with another link to download the PDF. Now, assuming, in the intervening months, you can no longer locate either the download links or the file itself I will attach another copy. As noted above keep track of where you store the file on your computer so you can locate it again in the future. Cheers, Rob

When expect to reprint Marlin 38A lever action manual? Noel Nauber Hi Noel, I have a load of Marlins manuals that are identified by the action but not the model number. If you can tell me a bit more about the weapon perhaps I have one I could print for you. Best, Abby
Thank you for fast reply. My need: Marlin model 39, 39A .22 S-L-LR lever action. Ideally, “shop manual” level of maintenance detail. Exploded view and clear description of all parts, screws. Lots of 2 and 4 page included “owner instructions” available on ebay, but looking for more detail in takedown, assembly. You list a promising title but show it unavailable. Noel Hi Noel, Ah yes, it was the request for info on the 38A you made that threw us off to begin the search. I’m looking at the 39A manual we have. it has no exploded view but it does have cutaway drawings of disassembly for cleaning that should help. I made the file active for you. Cheers, Rob

Hi Michael, Thank you for your very large order. We’ve been in business for 22 years and have tens of thousands of happy customers from all over the world so we are well established. Whenever we get a big order from a new customer we like to touch base and confirm that you know we offer reprints of originals, not the originals themselves. Also, we don’t offer refunds on large orders so if you want to start with a couple to begin with, that is fine with us. We do, however, have long time customers who order dozens of titles at a time so that is nothing out of the ordinary for us. Just let us know. Cheers, Rob – (no response so we shipped his order and haven’t heard back)

Hi, Is there anything available on the H&R model 1905 double action revolver? Or perhaps the 1904 model? Thanks. Gary Boyer Hi Gary, Apparently they did not identify their revolvers by model name back in the day. However, all the ones they made at the time are listed in the 1906 catalog. Here is the link: Harrington & Richardson Arms 1906 Revolvers & Gun Catalog – Best, Abby

RE: Stevens 1902 – Pope Rifle Barrels and Specialties
RE: Stevens 1905 – Pope Specialties Catalog
Dear Abby & Rob; I’m a real customer, not one of those eBay dwellers. I have received a print copy of the 1905 Stevens-Pope Specialties Catalog. On the invoice it’s listed as the 1905 edition. I thought I ordered the 1902 edition. Therein is a problem. Maybe it’s a shared problem. I don’t see a date on any of the pages, not a year date nor a copyright date, so how are either of us to know? The list of Stevens catalogs that you included with my order lists Stevens-Pope Specialties Catalogs for 1901 and 1902, nothing later. Nothing for 1905 at all. Here’s why I care about the date. I’m writing an article on the Winchester Single Shot “Winder Musket” for the American Single Shot Rifle Association’s “Single Shot Rifle Journal”. The Winder Muskets came to be because Stevens sold the Pope barrels listed on pages 25 & 26 of the Stevens-Pope catalog. Harry Pope demonstrated his barrels in public in September, 1902, and installed 15 S-P barrels on the rifles of an American team entering an international competition in May, 1903. In writing about this, I very much want to refer to an early Stevens-Pope catalog. If I can write “The barrels are listed on page 25 of the 1902 S-P catalog”, I’ve made my point. But I need to know the year of the bloody catalog. Can you help me? Regards, and thanks for everything both of you do, Dick LaVen Hi Dick, Wellll… I don’t know. Back in the day, some 20 years ago. We had a self proclaimed Stevens expert who demanded copies of all our Stevens catalogs for a book he was writing with the promise of sharing his treasure trove of 5000 original catalogs with us. He never got around to the sharing part of the bargain and after he died I noted the reprints of Stevens we gave him appeared on eBay in competition with our reprints, but a dollar cheaper. When we got the two Popes, we were told they were ’01 and ’02 but our expert friend insisted we re-date them to ’02 and ’05. Your guess is better then mine about the actual date. I’ll attach the ’02 for your comparison… Sorry I can’t be better help but we would appreciate a mention in your article. Cheers, Rob Hi Rob, Thanks greatly for the pdf. That clears up everything. Page 27 (on both) tells the story. Your 1902 edition (correctly labelled) shows the sight micrometer for the Model 1901 sight. The 1901 sight appeared in very late 1901. But it was only made for the Krag rifle. The paper copy that I have has the same micrometer on Page 27, but the text says it is for “the new Springfield”. That appeared in its first full-scale production form in 1903-04. So 1904 or 1905 seems a reasonable date for the later issue. Your Stevens expert was probably correct about the dates. I’ll mention your help in the article. Thanks again, Dick

I have a 1931 model 12 trap shotgun. I wanted to know if the takedown manual you offer will cover this year and model shotgun? Jeffrey Fallin Hello Jeffrey, You don’t mention the make of your shotgun but assuming it is a Winchester I can tell you the manual doesn’t distinguish between different types of the Mod 12 so I assume it would apply to your gun. Cheers, Rob Winchester Model 12 Gunsmith Complete Takedown Manual
