Home Defense- What we don’t think about:
When we talk about defending our home, most often we start with a gun- shotgun, pistol, AR, what have you, and how much lead we can pour into the SOB who broke into our home and endangered our family. This video backs up a bit and sensibly, we think, cautions us to start with a plan. The video is rather low key, and that is good, it gives us time to think about prevention and consequences before we break out the double 0s. Watch it all, you’ll be glad you did.

PODCAST
We do a 12 minute deep dive into the 1904 book, American Small Arms – A veritable Encyclopedia of Knowledge for Sportsmen and Military Men which is, as the title suggests, a comprehensive treatise on firearms at the turn of the 20th century. It covers virtually all small arms made in the U.S. along with ammunition, sights and telescopes, reloading, manufacturing machinery, and miscellaneous rules for tournaments, sporting events, trap, target, and game shooting.
Edward Samuel Farrow, (April 20, 1855 – September 8, 1926) born in Worcester County, Maryland, was an author and a commander in the American Indian Wars of the late 19th century. He is particularly known for his service in the Sheepeater Indian War Farrow was a graduate of the West Point Military Academy in 1876, and was a commanding officer of Indian Scouts in the Departments of the Columbia. |

Four Survival Myths That Could Get You Killed
Basically, no matter how many rabbits, snails, limpets, or venison steaks you eat, you can still starve to death because your body can’t digest all of that protein without what?

Only in America:
West Virginia lawmakers have rejected a ban on child marriage. The bill would have raised the age of consent to 18 in West Virginia: Currently minors can marry at 16 with parental consent, or even younger with a judge’s waiver. Republicans said teenagers marrying was not unusual in West Virginia. State Sen. Mike Stuart said his own mother married at 16 and “six months later, I came along.”
Good Week for Free Speech, with confirmation by a Canadian court that “flipping the bird” to anyone is not only legal but a “God given, charter-enshrined right that belongs to every red -blooded Canadian.”
Bad Week for Lying Low, with the arrest of Liu Moufu of China, who robbed a gas station of $24 in 2009 and evaded police for the next 14 years by living alone in a remote cave. Liu, now in his 50s, missed his father’s funeral and his son’s wedding, which he says he regrets.
THE CRIME OF COMMUNISM – Communism has led to more slaughter and suffering than any other movement in history” said Jeff Jacoby. So why doesn’t it evoke the same “instinctive loathing that Nazism does”? Even today where are leftists who insist that communism is noble and admirable, and would be superior to capitalism if only it were properly implemented. The truth is that the communist revolution that began in Vladimir Lenin’s Soviet Union has resulted in the deaths of 100 million men, women and children on four continents – about 10 times the number of people exterminated by Adolf Hitler’s regime.
In the Soviet Union, China, Eastern Europe, Cuba, Cambodia, North Korea and other countries, communist regimes have “cloaked their malice and brutality” with lofty rhetoric about “equality, peace and an end to exploration.” But party officials inevitably live like royalty while peasants starve and dissenters are executed en masse or dragged off to hellish gulags and prisons. Communist dictators have escaped serious accounting for their crimes against humanity. To this day, you can buy kitschy T-Shirts featuring mass killers Mao Zedong, Joseph Stalin or Lenin. Like Nazism, communism “has been unspeakably evil.” There is nothing noble or kitschy about it.
PRAYAGRAJ, INDIA Mass Mela: Tens of millions of Hindu pilgrims gathered in Prayagraj last week for the start of the Maha Kumbh Mela festival, which is shaping up to be the largest gathering in human history. Some 400 million people – equivalent to the whole population of the US plus France – are expected to visit the holy site over the next six weeks. With a budget of $800 million authorities have prepared a 10,000 acre campsite with 160,000 tents and 140,000 toilets to accommodate the pilgrims. The biggest festival in the Hindu calendar is held once every 12 years at the confluence of the rivers Ganges and Yamuna and the long ago dried-up Saraswati. Holy men, ascetics, pilgrims in 2013 drew 120 million, but Prime Inister Narendra Modi has been aggressively promoting this year’s festival to be much grander and larger to further his agenda of Hindu nationalism. Dozens of people were killed in a pre-dawn stampede at the Maha Kumbh Mela in northern India on Wednesday as tens of millions of Hindus gathered to take a dip in sacred river waters on the most auspicious day of a six-week festival. Reuters counted 39 bodies in the morgue of the local hospital, where bodies were still being brought in 12 hours after crowds surged towards the confluence of rivers where immersion is considered especially sacred.
SAVE COFFEE for the morning – Drinking coffee is good for your heart – but only if you confine your intake to the morning. That is the conclusion of a large new study involving more than 40,000 US adults, reports The Guardian (UK). Compared with those who avoided coffee altogether, people who drank it only before lunchtime were 16 percent less likely to die of any cause during a 10 year follow-up period, and 31 percent less likely to die from cardiovascular disease specifically.
But in those who kept chugging coffee through out the day, these benefits appeared to vanish, giving them mortality levels similar to non coffee drinkers. The benefits were the same for the morning coffee drinkers regardless of whether they drank only two to three cups or a whole pot. (those who drank only one cup enjoyed less of a longevity boost.) One possible expiation is that coffee later in the day can disrupt the body’s circadian rhythms, affecting sleep, inflammation and blood pressure. “We don’t typically give advice about timing in our dietary guidance,” says Lu Qi from Tulane University , “Perhaps we should.”

I am looking to purchase your Winchester Model 12 take down manual, however, need to know ifthe manual has complete disassembly instructions for trigger group and bolt mechanism. Thanks, Mike Smith
Hi Mike, Yes, it covers both the bolt and trigger assemblies. Rob
****************************** I am trying to find the right manual for my Lefever Nitro Special sxs 12 Guage . Keith Zielinski
Hello Keith, I’m afraid you have to do a bit more digging to help me here. Manuals for very old shotguns are rare, however they sometimes show up in other publications such as the 1913 Lefever catalog which has ones for the the guns they made then, both single and double trigger. The problem is they, as far as I see with a quick inspection always identified their models as a, b, c, d etc. Of course, if you are referring to one of the post-1915 Ithaca guns you have to give me a year of manufacture. Cheers, Rob

Colt 1964 – 1911A1 Match Conditioning USN Manual – Any chance that this manual covers the AMU Colt .38Spl wadcutter version of the 1911? Drputor (ebay)
I don’t think so. This is a US Navy manual discussing the how to match condition a 1911 with commercial parts. Rob
Thank you. I already ordered. Drputor (ebay)
****************************** Ref: Ithaca 1926 Gun Catalog – Good morning. I have a 1924 Auto & Burglar. Do you have the 1924 catalog? If not, what is the closest year you have that shows the Auto & Burglar? quality-tools-plus (ebay)
No, I’m sorry, we have a ’26 and a ’20, among many other years, but no ’24. Rob for cornellpubs
Okay, thanks. I will buy the ‘26. Is it possible to look in the ‘26 catalog and see if the Auto & Burglar is in it? If not, I will buy the ‘28, as the Auto & Burglar is shown in your listing photos. quality-tools-plus (ebay)
Yes, the ’26 has a page featuring the Burglar gun. Cheers, Rob for cornellpubs
Good afternoon. Thank you for your great service in my purchase. I’m wondering if you can please take a look at the 1928 Ithaca catalog. I purchased the 1926. The page on the Auto & Burglar is pretty faint. I’m still happy to have it. I’m curious to know if the page on the Auto & Burglar in the 1928 catalog is more legible. If so, I will buy it. Thanks!
I fixed it and will send you copies. Cheers, Rob for cornellpubs
******************************
Hello. I believe you sent me the wrong publication: you sent the 1964 catalog, not the Mauser 1928 Rifles (in German) Catalog version as depicted in your eBay listing. Rick
Hi Rick, Your copy is a 1928 MAUSER catalog that was re-issued by Stoeger in 1964. If that isn’t satisfactory for you, let me know and I’ll refund your purchase price. (We had access to a ’28 donor catalog but it was really ragged and the ’64 was crisp and clean. We left the date page from Stoeger in so as not to mislead any one about the origin of the donor catalog). Cheers, Rob for cornellpubs
Hi Rob, Okay, I see what you mean. I am not familiar with these pubs so I didn’t know the Stoeger reprint was the same thing. I’ll keep it, no need for a refund. Thanks, Rick

Hi Rob & Abby, Winchester June 1883 catalog received. Thank you! The Model One Hotchkiss is featured, but mine is the 1883 model with the two part stock and exposed receiver. Do you know which subsequent Winchester Catalog may have featured that model? If so, and you have that in stock, let me know and I will purchase that as well. I’m very much a novice in antique firearm restoration and I need all the help I can get! Thanks again for your help, Bill Budell
Hi Bill, the Jan 1885 Win catalog featured the Hotchkiss M1883. Best, Abby

Remington 1964 Firearms Catalog. Good morning are all pages sharp and in focus? Are they to original published size? mcor5129 (ebay)
No, the reprint is readable but I can’t promise that the areas with dark backgrounds reproduce sharply. We do the best we can but some things are not possible to make perfect. It is original size. Rob for cornellpubs (I’ve learned with ebay people to way downplay their expectations. If they ask a question like this one, chances are bad feedback is in the wond)
****************************** The best was if you have this one, pls see attached picture.curs_online (ebay Italy)
Hello Mirko, The image you sent is from one of Art Phelps books on Forehand Arms. The one you show is black and white but Phelps also did a color version. I have a few of them but they are very expensive. The B&W books are $600 and the color ones $1800. Both versions are new, the color ones have a dust jacket and the B&W was never published with a dust jacket. We will ship only to US addresses and neither will be advertised on ebay. The Forehand catalog reprints we offer show many of their guns and they are certainly much less expensive. Rob for cornellpubs.
Ok, thanks for your early reply, I also want to ask to you because you didn’t ship to Italy if you can send a digital version by mail or downloading it. Obviously I want to pay for it. It was the best for me. Thanks, Mirko
Hi Mirko, The work to make a single digital copy would also be expensive, $500 for B&W, $600 for color. Rob for cornellpubs.
****************************** Herter’s Inc 1952 Gun Accessories Catalog – Waseca, MN – Any turkey calls advertised? swesbw72 (ebay)

No, not Herter’s, but the: Olt’s 1947 Famous Game Bird Callers Catalog, Abercrombie 1904, Great Western Gun Works 1897, Adolf Frank Export Company (ALFA) 1911 Gun Catalog, Funsten Fouke Fur Co 1927 Trapping, James Bown 1876 & Son Enterprise Gun Works & Sporting Goods, Pittsburgh, PA, Stoeger 1955 – The Shooter’s Bible #46 Gun Catalog, Merwin, Hulbert & Co. – 1889 (NY), Von Lengerke & Antoine 1911 Gun & Sporting Goods Catalog No. 38 (Chicago) and many others have them. I’m not certain all of them are on ebay but we print to order. Rob for cornellpubs
Wow thanks Rob, I normally only buy originals but due to scarcity may be interested in reprints. swesbw72 (ebay)
****************************** Hello Rob and Abby, I am conducting research for Certain Stevens Shotguns manufactured between 1907 and 1955 and interested in any original catalogs, owners manuals or advertising for those shotguns. Many thanks, Jim Dawson
Jim, We get tons of requests for our original catalogs, but we are not selling them because they are packed away randomly in scores of big boxes and the work to sort through them is not something we have time for right now. Perhaps when we retire for good, but not now. Cheers, Rob
****************************** Pocket Manual for Shooters and Reloaders 1964 – Ackley – Does this book have information on reloading data? How many different reloads does it contain? valderaymo (ebay)
Yours is not an easy question to answer. The short answer is yes, but the number of loads varies with weight of bullet and type of powder. For example the .22 Hornet gives five different bullet weights from 20gr to 55gr and about 30 different combinations of bullets and powders, and this is just the pocket version.

We received an email advertisement: “!!!THIS BEAUTIFUL PIECE IS UP FOR SELL!!! This is an early, Nickel engraved Colt SAA made in 1882. I also spoke to the historical researcher about the meaning behind the letter. Factory letter which comes with the gun. When I say “original” nickel and grips we must clarify that this was done after leaving the factory. According to the letter, it was shipped to Hartley and Graham in New York City on July 5, 1882. Amount: $3800 (included were some beautiful photos)“
I wrote back to the “seller”: “To be interested, I need the following: Name of seller (a person not an email address), location of the weapon, a photo of the front end of the barrel looking down the muzzle. A clear image of the provenance letter. I look forward to hearing from you, Rob” (this sounds like a scam similar to the one we encountered a couple of years ago. Needless to say the nameless “seller” failed to respond)

Hello, Harrington & Richardson Arms 1962 Component Parts Catalog – I have a model 400 12 gauge. My question is for the Model 400 will this parts catalog have a page that looks like the one you have on display for the Model 48 Topper only for Model 400 12 gauge the shows the guns break out at the top and a list of all the parts with a number and price to the side? I really just want a break out view. If so I will purchase one. I bought a Brownell’s service manual to achieve this and low and behold model 400 and 401 were the only guns that listed absolutely nothing of use so that one got sent back. If you have access to a service manual for the model 400 I would be interested in that as well. Thanks’ for your help. John
Hello John, Yes, the 400 is included with parts and illustration (not exploded). Best, Abby

Ref: Lefever Arms Co. 1892 – shotgunboogie (ebay) – I left the below comment for your neutral feedback on ebay: “Low quality, first page is hardly readable.”
I said: “This guy is right, one page is not the greatest, readable but not perfect. On the other hand, someone many years ago took the time, probably with one of the ancient paper/chemical copiers, to preserve an extremely rare 130 year old catalog that we are very lucky to have to reprint. So, because Lefevers are rare guns we have sold exactly four of these catalogs in 20 years, yet we pay to advertise them every month as a service to collectors. Do we deserve a neutral for that? Rob for cornellpubs”
****************************** Hopkins & Allen Arms Co. Fifty Years of Gunmaking 1867 – 1917; Vorisek – I need a schematic for a H&A dbl action 32 with the fold down hammer. Do you have any? veteran6955
There was no such thing as a schematic for weapons at the time the revolver was made and I am not aware of any recent drawings that cover that piece. Sorry, Rob for cornellpubs
