After Gould’s death, The Rifle was acquired as an official publication of the National Rifle Association of America becoming American Rifleman. Mr. Gould authored The Modern American Pistol and Revolver, including a description of modern pistols and revolvers of American make; ammunition used in these arms; results accomplished; and shooting rules followed by American marksmen. The Modern American Pistol and Revolver was the first English-language book devoted to pistol shooting.

Orcas anthropomorphize humans…

Orca

Good Week For Retro Styles, after marine biologist reported that Orca Whales in Puget Sound are, once again, wearing dead salmon on their heads. The “salmon hat” phenomenon was first observed in 1987 and researcher Deborah Giles says that “honestly, we have no idea why this started again.”

MORE ANIMAL STYLES- A deer wishing to be considered stylish herself was spotted in McBride, Canada wearing a fashionable long-sleeve jacket with day-glo yellow accents. Or, maybe a near-sighted hunter wanted a better target.

GOOD MONTH FOR EMPATHY, after a team of British and German researchers found that supermarket shoppers are 58 per cent more likely to purchase individual loose bananas if they’re labeled “sad singles.” “The plight of the single bananas is really relatable,” said researcher Lis Eckmann.

SETTING the RECORD STRAIGHT, after Victor Willis, 73, co-writer of the 1978 Village People megahit “YMCA”, threatened to sue media outlets that call the song a “gay anthem.” This “false assumption,” said Willis, is based on the fact that his writing partner and several members of the Village People were gay, that the Y.M.C.A. was known as a “gay handout,” and that the band’s debut LP was “totally about gay life”

INNOVATION OF THE WEEK
A company that recycles nuclear fuel envisions reactors small enough to sit in a forest clearing and even serve as community hubs in remote areas, said Joe Salas in NewAtlas. Oklo says its Aurora “microreactors” are capable of a small output at 1.5 MW – enough to power around 1,000 homes. That’s peanuts compared with a traditional nuclear reactor, but Aurora “has no moving parts and can cool itself and shut down without human intervention.” “It is designed to run continuously for 20 years, after which the entire core can be removed and replaced with another sealed core containing the next batch of recycled nuclear fuel.”   It produces no nuclear waste – and in fact reduces waste by recycling material from other plants. Oklo hopes to have a reactor operating in Idaho in 2027, though regulatory approval could take longer.

THE WAR GAME THAT REMODELS REAL WARS
A British video came is used for warfare simulations by militaries worldwide, said Daniel Michaels and Juanje Gomes in The Wall Street Journal. War games of various kinds have been around for centuries, but the best one available today “didn’t originate with a defense contractor or institute. ” The game is based on Harpoon, a paper and dice game popular in the 1980s that became a source for Tom Clancy’s The Hunt of Red October. The computerized version, Command:Modern Operations, first released in 2013 has an open-source database that can be users, many of whom are in the Military. It “now includes tens of thousands of items covering almost every front line piece of equipment used in by the world’s Militaries since 1946 with details down to aircraft fuel consumption. The U.S. Military uses a version called Command:Professional Edition, and has even commissioned AI models that can play the game and run through 200 quadrillion options.

Hello, I have a large collection of vintage gun catalogs, manuals and related gun booklets and paper magazines from various gun manufacturers. Wanted to check if you have any interest in purchasing these items in bulk or can direct me to anyone that busswould have interest in buying. Thank you in advance for your consideration. Would appreciate a response either way. Happy Holidays! Alan Smith

Hello Alan, Thanks for thinking about us, but we are offered donations of collections all the time and have had to decline for several reasons. The main one is that we have a pretty good collection online already and we would only be interested in filling holes. Also, we have boxes and boxes of catalogs we have not yet got to. Your best bet would be to sell them on ebay or one of the gun sites like GunsAmerica but unless you spend the time to photo and describe each one I don’t think you would be very successful. Perhaps if you were to pick out the valuable titles, rare ones from post-war or ones from before 1940, then those would be worth advertising. Sorry I don’t have better news. Cheers, Rob

Thanks Rob, Really appreciate your response and the input. Alan

No thank you, we only sell paper, we are publishers and cannot purchase firearms through ebay. Rob

Good afternoon! Thank you for confirming my order. I believe I paid for this catalog online but there is no mention of it being paid by credit card. Since the order expires on 12/19/2024, I am concerned that perhaps you haven’t received payment. Could you please advise me on this matter and give me a ballpark on when I will be able to download the pdf? Conversely, if the highlighted download link is live now, please tell me how to use it because clicking on it doesn’t produce the catalog. Thank you! Jim

Hi Jim, I should add to my note I sent earlier that the download link works for me. If it coltisn’t working for you there are many possible reasons but the most likely would be your anti-virus program or an issue with the browser you are using. Cheers, Rob

Thank you both for your help! I will be trying harder later this evening and will let you know how it turns out! ( it just might be user error!) Jim

Abby and Rob, I was able to copy and paste the link into my browser and open it with no problems. I then saved and printed it to avoid staring at my computer and phone screens for long periods of time. Thank you very much for your assistance. This material will help me narrow down manufacture dates on several heirloom Iver Johnson pistols passed down to me from relatives, before I distribute my collection to my sons and a museum or two. I appreciate you! Jim

I am pretty sure I have seen somewhere that you print and bind orders one day a week but I now can’t find that info. If that is the case, can you tell me what day that is? Thank you, Steve

Hi Steve, No, we work pretty regularly, unless we are away, something we don’t plan until at least spring. So, it takes a few days for an order to work its way through the system but we are pretty good! Best wishes, Rob

Thanks (Steve)

2111Noticed you have catalogs on Savage that I understand you are printing. Just wondered if you are interested in what appears to be an original Jan 3rd, 1928 catalog that was in my husband’s collection. It is 6 1/4 by 3 1/4 inches and has the name SAVAGE with a native American holding a gun and underneath the words, Rifles – Shotguns – Ammunition. It is 24 pages and with it is a Savage Retail Prices List. xxIt was carefully packaged and that is why it appears to be an original. My husband, Joe Poyer, created the North Cape Publication series of books for gun collectors. Please let me know if this is something you are interested in. Bonnie

Hi Bonnie, We have a couple of 1928 Savage catalogs, so, no we are in good shape with ’28 Savages just now. Your best bet is to sell it on ebay or pick a price and advertise it on Gunbroker. Good luck, Rob

I receive the monthly newsletter and have in the past purchased several PDF versions of manuals, as I note that you do not post to Australia where I am situated, for reasons I appreciate. However, when I recently tried to put a PDF purchase into the Checkout, I am instructed to enter full delivery details such as street number and name, suburb, country, etc, including my email address. At the checkout it says we do not post to Australia, and asks for an alternative address, but does not appear to give me an option for email delivery of a PDF version. I would like your advice as to how to correctly order my PDF materials. Otherwise, I enjoy the newsletters and reviewing the catalogue. Kind regards, Brian Arthur Dec 14, 2024

Hi Brian, That is a known error. If you tell me what you would like to buy, I can fix it for you. Sorry for the error. Cheers, Rob

aaWeatherby 1983 Gun Catalog – PDF – Page 3 is blank on the catalog. Is this correct? Don

Hello Don, Yes, because I can’t print on the reverse of the cover stock, I thought it looked better to put page 2 on the first page and the blank after rather than start with a blank page. All the original pages are included. Rob

Message: looking for information/parts catalog/owner’s manual, etc. re: Savage model S-C over and under. Over: .22 WMR RF. Under: 20ga, 2 3/4 and 3″. No serial number. Looking for date of manufacture also. Ted Kingen

Hi Ted, Savage S-C doesn’t ring a bell for me. Try to identify the model name and age. Google should help or try Gunbroker.com or Gunsinternational.com or even look at our Savage publications indexes to see if you can find something similar. Then let me know and I’ll try to identify appropriate publications. Cheers, Rob

Dear Rob and Abby, I received the book and it is a wealth of information to me. I want to thank you for all that you do to provide publications like these to people like me who have a personal and deep interest in vintage and antique firearms. I love receiving your Cornell Publicatons emails and I share them with my friends. If you would like to share this in your rants and raves section feel free to do so. Once again thank you so much. Best regards, Harry Rebeck

I wrote to you in early December but I didn’t get a response. If my book doesn’t interest you, can you at least let me know? Thanks. Raffaele Balbi

Dear Mr. Balbi, I am so sorry, I cannot find any record of an email from you. Did you sent a note by postal mail? At any rate I don’t remember hearing from you so I must assume your message went astray. If you would be so kind as to tell me what you have in mind I will make certain to respond promptly. Cheers, Rob

Good morning Mr. Rob, I have written a book on the Parabellum, or Luger, in two volumes accompanied by a copy of a completely unknown manual from 1901/1902. You can consult it on the “Alexandria” portal of the Library am Guisanplatz in Bern which, as you certainly know, is the library of the Swiss Federation and Army. It is not better than the others: it is simply different in how it is chronologically structured and for the information it contains. I worked there for forty years. It can also be published in handouts. I would like it to be published also in the United States where the Luger is very popular. If you are interested I can send you the manuscript to better judge. Thank you and Merry Christmas.

Dear Mr. Balbi, Thank you for your note. We are probably not the best source for publishing your book. I suggest you send your manuscript to Stuart Mowbray at Gun and Sword Collector. Stuart’s email is: stuart@manatarmsbooks.com. I hope this helps in your efforts to publish in the U.S. Cheers and Merry Christmas to you, Rob

Thank you Rob, that’s really kind of you. Thank you and keep up the good work.

Howdy, I recently purchased a PDF manual on a Winchester model 69a, order #88488 on 1/3/24. Today i received the print version VIA USPS. I think that I only paid for the PDF and not the print version. If this is true, please let me know and tell me how much I owe you. Thanks, Jeff

Hi Jeff – what a gentleman you are! Every once in a while a PDF buyer is put in with Catalogs and Manuals reprints run by accident … so please just keep it and regards to you, no charge. Abby

xxHi ! I paid for a browning SA22 rifle manual! Am I supposed to receive a manual in the mail? Bruce Buettner

Hello Bruce, When you bought the manual there are two options, PDF or Print versions. You selected the PDF version which was $8.22 as opposed to $14.95 for the print version. The PDF version is a digital download and when you checked out the download was available for you to put on your computer, so, no, you shouldn’t expect a copy in the mail. Cheers, Rob

Are Arrieta shotguns catalogues reprints or original? Thanks, pesut_2012 (ebay)

We reprint over 7000 old gun catalogs and manuals but you have to scroll down past all the ebay ads to read that they are reprints… not our decision to put all the ads blocking our information! Cheers, Rob for cornellpubs

Hi Rob and Abby, Looking for a stock for my 12 gauge Hopkins and Allen falling block. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Mike

Hi Mike, Look at parts suppliers under resources at the website, that might be a source for you. Best, Abby

Hi Mike, Dave Cousins noticed your request for a stock for your H&A in our newsletter. He suggests you look at getting a stock for an 1885 Winchester… see below. Abby

Hi – Any interest in a set of American Rifleman magazines from 1972 to 1994? Thanks – Tom, Bozeman Montana USA

Hi Tom, Thanks but we couldn’t use them, we work with catalogs and books, not xxmagazines. Cheers, Rob

‘Morning Rob – Fair enough. I do have several boxes of firearm catalogues and promotional items going back to the 1980s. My father, a child of the depression, was a custom gunsmith with a sporting goods store and hated to throw away anything that might be reference material. If interested I can get you some info on same. Cheers — Tom

Oh Tom, that is very generous for you to offer but we are just not adding new material to the website, just now. We are getting old and the “new” website is taking a load of money and time to get to be half as good as the old site we had. Anyway, we are devoting all out time and energy to that project. Again, thank you. Best Abby

I would like a catalog from mossberg.zinterested in modsberg 88 shotgun John DeCosta

Hello John, This is very strange,  but I’ve looked at most of the post ’87 catalogs we reprint and none of them feature the M88 Mustang… that I saw. There is the 835 series but apparently they never advertised the 88. You can check the indexes with each publication at the website: (note they are not yet sorted by year). Sorry to disappoint. Abby

Do you have any brochures or information about this Harper’s Ferry 1859 58 caliber musket. I am in possession of my great great grandfather’s musket and I would like to find out as much information about it as I can. Thank you, Harry

Hello Harry, I’m sure somewhere in the books we reprint there is some information. Unfortunately, I don’t offhand know where. We generally specialize in catalogs from gun maker and reseller companies and those, mostly, didn’t begin to appear until the 1870s and later. Cheers, Rob

Hello Harry, I did a little more looking (I entered Harper’s in the search bar) and came up with a book that look promising. I don’t have time to actually read them for you but I wanted to pass along the information:
Notes on Ordnance of the American Civil War-1959 American Ord. Assn. Cheers, Rob

Thank you for your timely reply. Best Regards, Harry

Jimmie’s (November 2024 Newsletter) comment is both amusing and saddening on several levels. On a legal level he is obviously not at all familiar with copywrite laws (which didn’t exist until 1790). That’s the amusing part. The sad part is he fails to see and feel the wonderful opportunity you are making possible by letting us see and even use these old documents as reference or as just fun reading or to complete a display on some item. Thank you for doing what you do! Bill

Thanks Bill, as you see, after over 20 years we still get folks who don’t understand what we do, pity. Best, Abby

xxTrying to buy a Pdf – A&F catalog 1941 – cant find your link on how to for Canada purchase? Gary Allen

I’m looking for reloading data for the 30-03 cartridge. This was chambered in the Winchester model 1895. I’m looking for something that would show case dimensions and powder measurements for reloading. Please let me know what you might have available for this. Thank you, Richard Monson

Hello Richard, That is a very rare bird and I just don’t have time to do a deep dive to see if we have what you need. I’ll attach the reloading catalogs we reprint and if you see one or two that look likely I can see if they would help. Cheers, Rob

Hi Abby, I hope you’re doing well. If I were to want to purchase a lot of these publications, do you offer any sort of bulk discount? Sincerely, Isaiah

Hello Isaiah, We have never offered discounts for a couple of reasons. We have try to price our publications fairly and haven’t raised prices in twelve years despite increased costs. We are retired and look at what we do as part service and part business and as long as we don’t lose money we are happy. Also, the bookkeeping involved in calculating and administering discounts makes them more expensive in terms of time than are worth the extra business. So, I’m sorry we just don’t offer any discounts. One thing though, we intend to raise the prices of print and PDFs as soon as we can xxconvince the website lady to fiddle the pricing structure (she is slow) so if you want to have a collection of them, now is a good time. Cheers, Rob

Hello, I see this auction for the 1927 S&W parts list, and I also saw another auction with a 1937 S&W parts list and I have a couple of questions. 1) Are these all the years you have? 2) If I were interested in more than one, could you make me a combined price? thank you, Tom

Hi Tom, Here is the long answer… we reprint 67 old S&W catalogs, most of which have parts diagrams included (see the indexes by scrolling down past the ebay advertisements) and some dedicated parts catalogs like the ones you found. We also have another 30-40 manuals, many of which have parts schematics. Now, the problem is I don’t know offhand which ones are available on ebay. Also, if you order on ebay to get combined shipping you should order the items together and I think there is a button to request combined shipping. Cheers, Rob for cornellpubs
