armedU-HAUL PLAN B- The truck rental company has pledged to take action against the white supremacist group Patriot Front, which used several of its trucks to carry dozens of supporters to a Nashville rally. A U-Haul spokesman said that while the company does not discriminate on the basis of “political affiliation” its rental terms clearly state that passengers must “ride only in the cab of the truck.” Those who broke the rule could be denied future “rental privileges.”

OHIO’S SUPREME COURT has ruled that “boneless” chicken wings can contain bones. Much as “chicken fingers” aren’t made from chicken’s fingers, Justice Joseph Deters wrote the tern “boneless wings” merely denotes a style of preparation. In a dissent, Justice Michael Donnelly called this logic “utter jabberwocky” and said that when patrons “read the word boneless, they think that it means “without bones.” Good Grief!

ANT-MASH TRIAGE
xxFlorida Carpenter ants perform lifesaving amputations on one another, a new study shows. These half-inch-long, reddish insects are highly territorial and frequently do battle with rival colonies, so injuries to their legs are common. When study author Dany Buffat was observing one colony in 2020, he noticed some ants allowing others to chew their legs off. To study this odd behavior, Buffat and other researchers at Germany at University of Wurzberg damaged the legs of about 100 ants, either on the femur, close to the body, or on the tibia further down the leg. They found that the ants presented their injured legs to comrades for treatment. In the case of a femur wound, the doctor ant would gnaw the leg off. For tibia wounds, the doctor would not amputate, but would merely lick the area. This treatment was highly effective. For femur injuries, 95 percent of the treated ants survived, compared with 45 percent untreated, while for tibia injuries, 75 percent survived, while for the tibia injuries, 75 percent survived compared with 15 percent untreated. The level of sophistication with which they have evolved to care for their injured is unrivaled in the animal kingdom, behavioral ecologist Erik Frank tells The Washington Post. “Our human medical systems would be the closest match. “

BACK PAIN?  WALK IT OFF!
If you got lower back pain, try going for a hike. That is the conclusion of the first major study into walking as a treatment for pain, says The Guardian (UK) Researchers in Australia followed some 700 adults who had recently had an episode of back pain.  Half were put on a walking plan, with a psychotherapist instructing them to walk 30 minutes three to five times a week. That group averaged about 130 minutes a week of walking. The rest were in a control group, given no instructions about exercise. Over a three year study period, those in the walking group were only half as likely as the control group to suffer a bad flare-up and they remained entirely pain-free for nearly twice as long: an average of 208 days compared with 112 for the control.”Most people’s instinct is not to do anything because even taking a step can send a jolt or spasm up your back”  says patient Rory Fagan, who joined the trial in 2021 and says he has suffered only one episode of pain since. But if you push through he says, it is worth it. “Exercise is a path to reducing pain in the long turn. “

xxSITEBA INDONESIA,  Python swallows woman.   An Indonesian woman was killed and swallowed whole last week by a 30 foot reticulated python. The 36 year old mother of five, identified as Siriati – many Indonesians use just one name – had set out on a jungle path to meet her brother, and buy medicine for one of her children. When she did not show up, her husband, Adiansa, retraced her route and found a massive snake near the trail with what police called a “very large” lump in its belly and legs protruding from its mouth. Adiansa killed the snake with a wooden stake and called other villagers to help him retrieve the body. While such killings are rare, but this was the second time a python has swallowed someone in a month in South Sulawesi province.

BAD WEEK FOR METAL FATIGUE after an overworked “administrative officer robot” in Gumi City, South Korea, threw itself down a flight of stairs in an apparent suicide. Witnesses said that before its fatal plunge, the robot was “circling one spot as if something was there.” Latest Robot News.
xxSouth Korea’s Gumi City Council announced the robot was found unresponsive after having apparently fallen down a two-meter (six-and-a-half foot) staircase last week. Witnesses saw the robot officer “circling in one spot as if something was there” before the accident occurred, but the exact cause of the fall is still being investigated, a city council official told AFP. “Pieces have been collected and will be analyzed by the company,” the official said, adding that the robot had “helped with daily document deliveries, city promotion, and delivered information” to local residents. “It was officially a part of the city hall, one of us,” another official said. “It worked diligently.”
Headlines in local media questioned the apparent robot suicide, saying: “Why did the diligent civil officer do it?” or asking “was work too hard” for the robot? Appointed in August 2023, the robot was one of the first to be used in this manner in the city. Made by Bear Robotics, a Californian robot-waiter startup, the robot worked from 9 am to 6 pm and had its own civil service officer card. Unlike other robots, which can typically only use one floor, the Gumi City Council robot could call an elevator and move floors on its own. South Korea is one of the most enthusiastic users of robots globally. It has the highest robot density in the world, with one industrial robot for every 10 employees, according to the International Federation of Robotics. Gumi City Council is currently not planning to adopt a second robot officer at this moment, it told AFP.

Dominion Ammunition c1929 (CIL – in Spanish).   Dear Mr. Kushner xx (hekus28 ebay), Abby and I were disappointed to see you left negative feedback on eBay for us. What was the problem? As far as we can see the reprint we sent you was a good copy with no flaws. If there were a problem, we wish you had contacted us to allow us the opportunity to fix whatever was wrong before leaving negative feedback, however, we are still concerned and want to fix the issue. Please let us know. Cheers, Rob Mouat

We never heard back from him. Really? Newby dude lives in Canada and he was chafing about delivery times through the eBay delivery system, not our fault, but he can bomb us and we have no recourse. He also failed to contact us before leaving less than positive feedback as stated in the eBay terms. Bravo “hekus”!

Why does this matter? Well, two reasons really. First, it bothers us when we go to such an amount of trouble to make these hard to find publication available at a reasonable price, that people nitpick or off-candidly say nasty things about our efforts. Bad feedback also leads to the people who delight in “piling on”. They see something nasty and want to embellish it themselves. If you don’t think this happens, just look at our political scene!

Looking for assembly instructions (or a schematic) for a British Bulldog Pistol and a Belgium Bulldog xxPistol. If you have these, please let me know and I will purchase from you. Thank you. Jerome A Landry Sr

Hello Jerome, The original British Bulldog was a Webley, but the name was used by many different makers for revolvers, but, because they were generally made in the 19th century it is rare that any instruction sheet survives or came with them, so no, I’m sorry I don’t have anything that can help you. Best, Abby

Thanks for trying. Appreciate.

Hello, hope all is well. Quick question, are you able to combine shipping if 2 or more items were purchased, or do I need to order directly from your website for that to be an option? I appreciate any information you could provide, & thank you for your time.

I don’t think combined shipping works for our store on eBay. Or if it does, I confess I can’t tell you how it works. Are you in the US or outside the US? Rob for cornellpubs

ya know if you would show all 24 pages and offer each page in a poster size (18×24) or what ever so one could frame it and hang it in their gun room you could sell alot of them. just sayin?

Hmmm, we reprint almost a million pages so, let’s see, a huge new amount of work to set it all up, then advertise it and deal with the unhappy people that don’t like the page enlarged that much or want it bigger, more machinery to break down, increased postal problems with bent packages, people wanting us to print on canvas etc, etc. No, I’m sorry we just won’t do that, we’ll leave it to our successors. Cheers, Rob

Hi Mike, The Daisy 1990 airgun parts catalog we have shows exploded parts views for loads of Daisy guns. The list is below. If you don’t know the model number of your gun, the best I can suggest is that you buy the PDF version for a few bucks and compare the images. Cheers, Rob

August 2024 Newsletter: “Hello, I’m looking for a 1980s George Lawrence Leather Company catalog that includes a holster size fit chart..might you have one..thanks

No Brad, we don’t. However, most holster catalogs don’t list individual handguns, the list would be enormous. They ask if the weapon is an auto or revolver and then small, medium or large. Abby,”

Dear Abby, I noticed the query regarding a holster-size fit chart for Lawrence holsters. In fact, such a chart was printed in Stoeger’s Shooter’s Bibles in the 1960s.  Shooter’s Bible #56 (1965) has it on Page 391.  It’s one page, and simply gives the number code for each (maker’s- ed) gun, which is then applicable to every model of holster.  For example, if you see “514” stamped on the back, it’s for a Colt Woodsman Match Target (4 1/2 – inch barrel.) Hope this helps. All the best, Terry
