STUPID LAWSUITS SECTION… A judge has dismissed a class action against Hershey over the packaging of its Halloween candy. The lawsuit focused on products including Reese’s Peanut Butter Pumpkins and Reese’s White Ghost, whose wrappers depict candies with “spooky” facial features that do not appear on the candy itself. U.S. District Judge Melissa Damian acknowledged the potential for disappointment, but ruled that the faceless candies are not “so flawed as to render them worthless.

GOOD NEWS FOR THE GIRL NEXT DOOR… An Ohio lawmaker has introduced a bill that would ban marriage between humans and AL chatbots. State Rep. Thad Claggett says he is alarmed by the pace of AL progress and worries that Ohioans in the near future might claim “that this machine is their spouse” and grant it control of their of their finances and power of attorney. Such assets and decisions, he said, must never be “transferred into the world of machines.”

GOOD WEEK FOR CLAWED CRUSADERS… after New York City mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa proposed releasing feral cats as a solution to the city’s rat problem. “This is Mother Nature’s way of preventing rats,”said the Republican, who added that New Yorkers should view the cats “like Batman and Robin.” Of course, then the city would have a cat problem.

BAD WEEK FOR PRESTIGE POULTRY… after a Florida man put a note in his neighbor’s mailbox informing her that he had killed and eaten two of his own pet peacocks to punish her for having fed them without his permission. Craig Vogt, 61, has been charged with aggravated animal cruelty.

BAD TIME TO NOT GET THE JOKE… after a Texas Officer on horseback quipped that his steed was a “narcotic-smelling horse” to lighten the mood while questioning two suspects, leading one of the men to sprint away in a panic. The poorly informed fugitive was quickly apprehended.

BAD WEEK FOR SPORTSMANSHIP… after American fans hurled abuse and cups of beer at visiting European players and their family members during the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black golf course on Long Island, N.Y. “as a former player, captain and as an American, I am ashamed of what happened,” said retired golf legend Tom Watson. Europe won the trophy, 15-13.

HE CLIMBED 72 PEAKS IN 31 DAYS… AND RAN OR BIKED BETWEEN THEM!

Kilian Jornet, one of the world’s most accomplished mountaineers, did something this month that left even other elite athletes gasping. He climbed all 72 summits in the contiguous United States that stand over 14,999 feet tall.

But reaching so many summits, so quickly, was only half the battle. In fact, it was “the fun part” a surprisingly rested- looking Jornet said in a Zoom interview from Seattle early in October, three days after summiting Mount Rainier in knee-deep snow to complete the grueling journey, which he started in early September.

The hard part was negotiating the spaces in between, “If you’re driving, you see the landscape,” Jornet explained. “But you don’t feel it.” Okay how do you feel it? By running the hundreds of miles of remote mountain ridges, and biking the thousands of miles of desolate highway, that separate the towering summits scattered across Colorado, California, and Washington.

In total – Jornet covered 3,198 miles under his own power. He biked 2,568 miles. He ran 629 miles. He climbed 403,638 vertical feet.

Jornet cemented his legacy as one of the all-time greats long before this achievement. Born just outside Barcelona in 1987, he grew up in a ski area in the Pyrenees where his father was a mountain guide.

At 26, he set records for climbing Switzerland’s Matterhorn and Frances’s Mont Blanc, the tallest mountain in Western Europe. A year later, he broke the speed record climbing the bitterly cold and deadly Denali, in Alaska, the tallest mountain in North America. A few years after that, he climbed Mount Everest… twice in one week without supplemental oxygen.

Last year, he climbed all 82 summits in the Alps over 4,000meters (13,123 feet) in 19 days, traveling the 750 miles between them on foot and bicycle. “This was without any doubt, the most challenging thing I’ve ever done in my life, mentally, physically, and technically,” he wrote on social media. “But also maybe the most beautiful.”

THE RANGE

Every day, thousands of people travel to indoor ranges across the country — to learn to shoot, to hone their shooting skills, to compete against other shooters, to have a good time.

Safety measures abound at ranges. Shooters wear eye and ear protection. They generally stand in a booth, separated from others by bulletproof walls. But they still face an overlooked hazard: the concussive blast waves set off by the firing of weapons indoors, which can damage the brain.

Thomas Gibbons-Neff, a domestic correspondent for The Times, has experienced those blast waves. He’s a former Marine infantryman whose beat is guns, gun policy and gun culture. Going to the range is part of his job. Among other things, it’s a way to meet sources while keeping his skills up. You can learn a lot at a gun range.

Some months ago, T.M., as we call him, drove to his local range to fire his AR-15 rifle. When he was done, he told me, he felt “distinctly weird.” It took him a long time to pack up his gear. “I’d had lunch,” he said. “I wasn’t dehydrated. I didn’t have a headache. But it took me forever just to raise my wrist to look at my watch.”

He wondered: Can you get a brain injury at the gun range? T.M. teamed up with Dave Philips and Jeremy White to find out. Dave, who covers the military and veterans, has written extensively about how firing some weapons can damage brain cells, and how exposure to concussive waves of energy may cause permanent injuries. Jeremy’s a graphics editor who has covered gun culture in the United States on and off for years.

They were eager to find out what happens when people fire civilian weapons indoors. “Guns are just such a big part of our culture,” Jeremy told me yesterday.

The team members did their own testing and gathered their own data. They measured the blast waves of several popular civilian guns at an indoor range, using the same sensors the military uses to study larger weapons.

The data showed that smaller-caliber guns can pose a danger pretty quickly, and that large-caliber civilian rifles delivered a blast wave that exceeds what the military says is safe for the brain. Indoor ranges, designed to make shooting safe, can worsen blast exposure, they discovered.

Jeremy and his colleagues brought the data to life. Using a high-speed camera, they captured what happens when a person fires guns at an indoor range. Jeremy illustrated what happens when those waves reflect off the hard surfaces of a shooter’s booth.

And to show what happens when you fire a large-caliber rifle, he hung a sheet of silk chiffon fabric alongside the prone body of the shooter. (“I spent way too much time in fabric shops in the garment district looking for that,” he said.) Seen in real time, nothing really happens. When he slowed the film, though, the illustration tells a whole story: A powerful wave runs through the fabric when the firing pin hits the cartridge, all but enveloping the shooter’s skull in 7.6 pounds per square inch of concussive pressure.

Here’s what that looks like:

How harmful are those concussive waves on the body? Scientists have yet to answer that clearly, though the military considers some of them unsafe. A recently retired Army blast safety researcher told Dave that repeated blast exposures, however small, may cause damage. “Stretch a rubber band a hundred times and it bounces back, but there are microtears forming,” he said. “The 101st time, it breaks.”

Hello, I would like to buy copies of all of the United States Cartridge Company catalogs you have on e-bay except the 1881 and 1891 catalogs which I already have. Is there a way to do a bulk order/shipping to save some postage?

The quick answer is no, not on eBay, it is impossible to unwind the eBay charges to get credit for the missing revenue when we combine shipping (they charge commissions on shipping as well as the price of the item). Hello William, Every once in a while, we get an order that just won’t cooperate, and I’m sorry, this one is yours. The first package we sent (USPS Tracking- 9400136106028307138194) never got into the post office system even though they got the package with postage attached. The second one (USPS Tracking- 9405536106028277896776) is on its way to you despite eBay not updating the tracking number when we shipped it on Oct 21. I did, however, manually update it just now. Of course, that one is late, so, in case there is a problem with it, I’ll send a third package today. I am sorry for all this confusion but I hope you agree we are working hard to fix things. Oh yes, one other thing. When I manually entered the October 21, 2025, shipping date this morning, eBay recorded the data shipped as Oct 25. Hello, I hope your week is going well and thank you for getting the Ideal mauanls I requested out so quickly. I went through the #22, #28, #33 and $36 and three of them, the #28, #33 and #36 are wonderful. They replicate very well a couple of original Ideal manuals I have, that are becoming fragile with age. It will be nice to have some modern durable prints to use. I have an old Winchester manufactured the same year the manual #22 (1911), that I do not have an an original manual for, and would have covered the 32WSL data for that year. Unfortunately the data on 6 pages, on the back side, were mis-printed in a micro font, almost like a microfiche print. It is right in the middle of the manual and starts on the page with the lady playing the harp and ends a page before the Native American with the bow. The pages in #22 are not numbered so those are my reference points. I’ve attached some photos for reference. I don’t know that I need an entire replacement manual? Maybe some addendum prints that I can insert for those pages, would make the manual useable, as I plan on using the manual and not for collector purposes. Thank you, John

Hello again folks, From our previous communication, you know that I collect pre-war gun catalog information (much of it from you) for Mossberg research. I have spent the last year and a half pulling together pdf scans of essentially all the Wards firearms sections from about 1920 through 1948, so that I can decode the list, schedules, and original sale configuration of house brand (Premier and Western Field) Mossbergs at Montgomery Ward. This information has previously been hard to get hold of because Wards went out of their way to make it hard to get at – house brand catalog listings can’t be accessed with regular model crossover charts. After 1935 they didn’t even list Model numbers at all.

I just submitted the first of several articles on early results of that research to the National Mossberg Collectors Association for their quarterly. I have also shared the scans with a friend who is interested in doing the same for some of the Savage and Stevens rifles. The decoded catalog numbers allow a clear parallel chronology to the spotty information production information in manufacturer catalogs.

I gathered these by purchasing catalogs, finding a few free catalog downloads, and traveling to or corresponding with repositories. It was tough – there is no single repository that has them all. I assume you understand if there are copyright issues. The university repositories (Cheyenne, WY and Memphis TN) were clear they do not hold copyright but otherwise would not comment whether anyone else did. From your offerings, I gather there may not be copyright issues for these catalogs. As you can imagine, I have spent quite a bit of money on this pursuit.

I intend to keep researching with these in a continuing series of articles reconstructing Mossberg production history and making available the information that has been unavailable until I figured out the catalog number codes that supplement the confusing crossover charts. But the effort and expense have made me worry about this information not being available beyond my tenure. I’m 70, so I may or may not be around a good while yet. But long-term I’d rather they were available to enthusiasts and researchers. At the same time, I wouldn’t mind recovering some of the expense either. You folks are the experts on this and I assume you procure, beg, buy, borrow the material that you sell as scans/reprints. I’m in no hurry to recoup costs but want to float the idea for your thoughts. Five or 10 years from now I would probably just give the files to you, but right now I’m still too aware of the costs. Duane, Thanks for your long note. Your work is interesting, but I am afraid you’ll have some trouble making money from it. Our modest success in selling reprints comes from our having over 7000 different titles to sell. A few reprints sell all the time, but a great number, including all the Mossbergs, very rarely, if ever, sell. Trying to sell your research on Mossbergs, I’m afraid, would be a hopeless task; based on our experience, people would just not pay for your hard work. Anyway, the takeaways you should get from my note are that Mossbergs are really a very narrow niche and the sort of research you are doing is narrower still. I think your choice of sharing your work with the Mossberg collectors is a good one, but I don’t see how we can help. However, if you can be more specific about what you think we might be able to do for you, I will be pleased to look at helping. Cheers, Rob

Hello. I just received the Stevens 1903 catalog and it does not have the single shot model 165 shotgun in it. It has the 110, 120, and 140. I specifically wanted the 165.

We goofed! We did the indexes for 7000 of the catalogs and many manuals we offer and we failed on that one. It was probably conflated with the Stevens 1904 circa Arms & Tool Company No. 51. Hi Jean, Thanks for your note. You are right, we no longer ship to Canada, or Europe for that matter. Virtually all countries now require shippers to collect import duty, taxes and etc.. This means we would have to keep accounts for each individual country and submit reports and payments, something the two of us just can’t do for what we charge. I can tell you that many of our publications are available on ebay and they, for a price, handle shipping. Alternately, you can download a pfd from us and have it printed locally.
