Coverdale Collection- Significant Auction- 1950

The Tennessee Alabama&Georgia Railway Company, of Chattanooga, Tn. was purchased in 1929 by W. H. Coverdale and was run by his firm of Coverdale&Colpitts. Mr. Coverdale was the owner of Gulf States Steel at Gadsden which he sold to Republic Steel at about the same time he purchased TAG. He was made a director of Republic when he sold them the mill. TAG remained a Coverdale (his estate by then) property until the late 50s when it was purchased by the Siskin brothers who owned Siskin Steel in Chattanooga. Mr. Coverdale was a sportsman, aviator and collector of fine weapons and art. Much of his art collection was bought by the Government of Canada and is displayed at the National Archives of Canada. His extensive gun collection was auctioned shortly after his death in 1950 by Parke-Bernet in New York. This is the auction catalogue of that sale. The Coverdale collection of Rifles, Muskets, Pistols, Revolvers, Armor, Swords and Oddities was the first major arms sale following World War II.
