This seventh edition of the E. Remington&Sons Gun Catalog is a masterpiece of nineteenth century advertising and instruction. It covers everything to do with Remington guns and accessories and is beautifully illustrated. This is a real "keeper." The booklet starts at the beginning:
<em>"The invention of the rifle dates from the fifteenth century. One Gaspar Zoller, a gunmaker from Vienna , was in the habit of grooving his barrels to facilitate loading and permit the use of a tightly fitting bullet. He discovered that when these grooves were inclined so as to form a spiral, greater accuracy was obtained. This is due to the fact that bodies in rapid rotation have a strong tendency to retain their axes parallel to themselves, and to offer a resistance dependent upon the velocity of rotation, to any force that tends to deviate them. Two centuries passed before the introduction of the conical bullet, which was then made to fit tightly, and was driven down with a stout wooden ramrod."</em>
