1-1-2010 Abby, I noted your piece about Colonel Boxer. It might be worth mentioning that the British military authorities quickly adopted the Berdan primer with its two "fire holes" giving more certainty of ignition. The Boxer, however, became more popular in the US, especially in remote regions, because with its single central "fire hole" the cartridges were easier to reload than those with Berdan primers. A nice piece or irony I reckon. Long live the special relationship, despite the little problem back in 1776! Peter G Smithurst, Curator Emeritus, Royal Armouries Museum
