The H. W. Cooey Machine Shop made mechanical parts including Ross Mark III folding peep sights for the Canadian government during the First World War. After the war Cooey produced a line of .22 rifles and .410 shotguns. Later, during the Great Depression, they assembled shotguns for Iver Johnson Arms and Cycle Works to sell to the Canadian market and fishing reels for the South Bend Bait Co.
The company prospered during and after World War II but Cooey was sold to the Olin-Mathieson, St. Laurent, Ontario, Winchester-Western (Canada) Ltd. in 1961. Winchester introduced a Canadian version of some of their rifles and shotguns and continued to produce some Cooey designs.
The good times lasted until the late 70s when labor and political problems closed the factory in Cobourg. The manufacturing equipment was sold to Lakefield Arms Ltd., of Lakefield, Ontario along with rights to the Cooey Model 64B. (Much of the foregoing history was thanks to the booklet "Cooey Firearms Made in Canada 1919-1979" x John A. Belton. Historical Firearms Series No. 28)
