You could use a curved piece of glass to focus the sun’s rays, you could use one of several techniques involving the friction of wood against wood or you could strike a spark into a bit of tinder. Mechanical tinder lighters naturally emerged from this need and they took many forms and degrees of elaboration- here are some examples.
