NOTE: Arms Heritage Magazine has developed an alphabetical index by patentee for all cartridge patents from 1848 through 1877. This index includes the date of the patent and the patent number. Using this listing, collectors and researchers can obtain full copies of any of the patents, including diagrams and text at the website Google Patents. Copies can be downloaded, printed out or saved free of charge.

In 1986 Armory Publications acquired an original copy of a book entitled �CARTRIDGES FOR SMALL ARMS � PATENTS�, published in 1878 by the Patent Office. The book was faithfully reprinted, even copying the binding style. In that book is a complete record of cartridge patents, starting in 1848 and ending in 1877 including images and text for each one. It is a valuable work but it suffered from one defect, it lacked an alphabetical index.

After it was re-published, a group of collectors corrected that defect and prepared an alphabetical listing. This is that index and it is a valuable resource on its own.
