The Peabody Breech-Loader was one of the more successful arms of the Civil War and this single shotgun persevered into the Reconstruction. These two catalogs represented "the best shot" fired by John B. Anthony, Treasurer to keep the company competitive in the weapon business. His multi-page endorsement of the Peabody Rifle is a classic. His descriptions of the advantages of the Peabody are notable:

"Finally, eight of the whole number presented were selected by the Board for further testes, and these eight were exposed to variable weather for ten days, upon the roof of a building, beside being daily wet by artificial means. The weather. snow and ice. sudden thaw. Each day, however, the guns were fired, without cleaning, and by the expiration of the ten days. dried suddenly. high temperatures. Each of the eight guns were fired upon the last day, though some with considerable difficulty."
